You wouldn’t be wrong for questioning how captivating a song about malaria can possibly be, but trust Blinky Bill (Just A Band), Dela, Daddy Owen, Octopizzo and Size 8 to prove singing about it can be done well on the Malaria No More sponsored track: “Malaria Ni Hatari” (Malari is Danger).
The song was released on August 11th and features some catchy lyrics, for instance: “Malaria, we’re gonna kick you out this area.” Dela delivers that line with the kind of conviction that will make you want to swat a mosquito. Speaking with Blinky Bill on why his vocals did not feature on the song, despite writing the track and chorus, the eclectic artist said: “I love to produce and basically felt that the artists who were on the track could do a far better job.”
The singers are not the only ones who did a good job, Malaria No More has been doing great work around the continent to end malaria deaths. The organization counts amongst its successes, educating 20 million Africans through the Nightwatch initiative. Akon, 50 Cent and Melinda Gates are just a few influential leaders who have championed the organization’s work to encourage people to: “sleep under nets and seek timely testing and treatment“. According to the organization, 90% of the 483,000 children dying per year from malaria are African.
